Maybe he should feel anguish, sorrow, or anger. Anything. Anything. For all he knew, his parents were dead. He couldn't find a single thread of feeling within him. The bottom of his pads were cracked and bleeding, and his legs burned with exertion. Running certainly wasn't something Evariste was used to.
He could feel his exhaustion, but he didn't feel scared. On either sides of him, buildings erected. Somehow, they had reached a town. His pace slowed, and he stopped, panting at the ground. Maybe he should feel something. Could he somehow conjure up panic? Anguish? Anything?
Evariste only felt tired. Out of the corner of his eye he saw something, and he wished he hadn't looked. The face of an animal, a child, stared up at him, frozen in horror. The face was connected to a head, and the body was no where to be found.
Bile rose in Evariste's throat, and he shot forward a few paces before his forepaw connected to a large piece of rubble, throwing him off balance. He slammed into the ground and slid along the dust gathered on the cobble pathway. As soon as the pain subsided, Evariste moved to get up, but found that his body liked laying down. Evariste kept his eyes closed and focused on breathing. He laid on his side, among other carnage.
Well, at least he found something. Disgust, for a poor child's face. Maybe the disgust was for himself. "It's everywhere," he breathed quietly, and broke off into a fit of coughing because the dust gathered in the back of his throat.

"Your highness," came a soft yet tentative voice from behind the prince. "Please, I know you are tired, but we must keep going. It's not safe here." Was it safe anywhere? All hell had broken loose back at the manor and as his alert gaze flickered around, it seemed the small town had not been spared. How much farther could they run before they could be considered safe?
These were the only thoughts that passed through Garron's mind as the guard soon found himself beside Evariste. Every instinct that had been steeled with training was only concerned with their own welfare, Evariste's safety. Other thoughts would process later. Only when they were safe could they consider grieving for the dead. No time to sit on proper ceremony.
Dismay would come later, along with thoughts on whether or not those living in the capital had been spared. If not, what was to become of Adalinda's government? What was to become of them? Everyone around them was dead. Not even dead. They had been slaughtered. Everyone back home had likely faced the same fate. Was this the end?
Later, he told himself. Later.
"Your highness, we have to keep going."

"To go where?" Evariste mumbled, but he pushed himself up onto his paws, looking up at Garron. He didn't mean to sound immature, he was genuinely curious on where they would go. What did Garron have in mind? Could there be anywhere that was safe? Turning to look at what was left of the buildings, Evariste lowered his ears ever so slightly. "Garron, I don't wish to complain... but..." He looked down the street and then over towards his guard. "I am not used to all this running, and I don't know how much longer I can go for...." His ears flattened even more and he dipped his head. "I am sorry... I am not being helpful.."

"I understand you're not, your highness. But it seems we just have to keep going until we can find somewhere safe." He cast an uncertain glance around the ruined town. "However far that may be." Garron made his way to Evariste's side, far enough to maintain proper respect, but close enough to where he could offer support if needed. "Let's try to travel as far from any settlements as we can. Then, I promise you, we can stop and rest for the night." But how safe would it be to rest at night? Would the darkness bring forth any new calamities?

But what if there is no where safe? Evariste held in a sigh. He couldn't even lift his head, and his tail nearly dragged on the ground. That sounded so far away. There was no way Evariste was ever going to make that. The farthest he usually went in a day was around the castle. How silly would it be if Garron had to carry him on his back? He nearly laughed at the thought. A sound brushed against his ears, and he lifted his head to look around. "Garron, did you hear that?"
"-elp!"
Evariste's ears turned towards the source of the sound. "Perhaps-"
"Help me! You idiots!" The voice came out loud and clear this time, before the sound of a surprised yelp faded away.
Not really the heroic type, Evariste looked towards Garron for guidance on what to do.
In case Shadow is wondering, Cloudy imagines that our little thief had been down in a cellar or some sort, stealing into good wines or honey. Part of the roof caved in, but instead of letting our precious little monkey out of her hole, it merely just trapped her in.

The guard snorted with discontent and, as usual, remained wary of everything. Because not for a second could he let his guard down. "Your highness, we should go. We don't know what to expect if we help. It may already be too late or it may very well be a trap." Garron turned his back from the direction the call for help had come from and began to pad away. Every second they wasted could very well be their last.

Evariste was about to follow him, about to mindlessly follow his guard and walk away. But… why would anyone give them any trouble after what happened? Padding lightly, Evariste made his way towards the voice. He walked carefully, making sure he wouldn't join her, before he laid down to try and peer through the large crack in the flooring in search of the owner of the voice. "Please? I am sorry for calling you idiots, b-but I'll starve down here. I can't get out…" When his eyes adjusted, he spotted a monkey sitting on an overturned shelf, broken bottles of glass around her. Her fur looked matted from what he could see, but overall, she didn't look very dangerous. Not at all.
Letting out a breath, Evariste sat back and turned to look for Garron. "Garron, can't we just help her out? Then we can continue on. It… it doesn't feel right…" To add to the body count.

Garron protested internally, wanted to scorn the prince for being foolish, but he remained silent. Instead he grumbled to himself about the lack of urgency. The guard made his way over, his large paws kicking up dirt and shoving rubble away. He stopped once he was close enough, evaluating the damage, stifling an impatient sigh. "The rest of the roof could collapse if we tried lifting it," Garron noted, mostly to himself. He peered forward towards the crack Evariste had looked through earlier. Perhaps, if he dug enough, they could create a hole large enough for her to fit through. And soon Garron started to dig, using his powerful paws to claw away at the rest of the flooring or dirt, whatever was there. And, soon enough perhaps if there were no complications, perhaps a large enough hole had been dug.

Evariste wondered if he could help, but no doubt he would just end up cracking a nail or tearing it off it he tried. He heard some noises below, the girl talking no doubt. When Garron stopped, he cautiously leaned towards the hole and looked down it. Before he could open his mouth, there was a blur of gray and hands grabbed his fur. Surprised, Evariste reared back. He didn't say a word, other than a small grunt of surprise.
"Thank you, thank you! Thank you!" The monkey cried, clinging tightly onto Evariste. He sat, pushing up as straight as he could, feeling his ears heat up. The monkey kissed his cheek and then kissed him right on the muzzle, before dropping him and whirling towards Garron. "And you! Heartless, mean, angry bear!" She threw herself at Garron, if she could, and slipped up onto his back, patting his head. "Take me to where you were going."

Garron let out the agitated growl he had been holding in before vigorously shaking his head in an attempt to shake the monkey off, his armor clanking with the force. "Get off," he growled up at the monkey. "We don't have time for this nonsense. And show more respect to his highness," Garron muttered angrily before glancing over at Evariste. "Are you ready to go, your highness? We should keep moving while it's still light out." To himself, he muttered, "we don't know what the night will bring."
